Established in 2006 under the Federal Governments Promoting Mental Health – Youth Mental Health initiative, headspace is Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation. The headspace mission is to deliver improvements in the mental health, social well being and economic participation of young Australian’s aged 12-25.
headspace services are staffed by professionals who have specific expertise in working with Young People, headspace services are places where Young People and their families are encouraged to become involved.

Who is eligible?
headspace services are one-stop-shops offering ‘youth-friendly’, community based health services that have been specifically developed for Young People, aged 12 – 25 and their families. They are places where Young People can receive support for a range of issues including
- General health
- Mental health and counselling
- Education, employment and other services
- Alcohol and other drug services.

There is no charge for this service
Referral
Clients can be referred to headspace by their own doctor or alternatively a Young Person can simply present themselves, or make a phone call, to one of our centres & refer themselves, they will see the Duty Worker for an Intake screening appointment.
All Referrals/Intake go through the Youth Access Team. The care pathway is adapted to suit the clients needs based on assessment processes, undertaken by their assigned YAT worker.

Session information
- Appointments with a headspace worker usually last 50 minutes to an hour.
- Sessions with a doctor at headspace might be shorter.
- Young People can visit headspace to talk about their problems just once, or they may come back for more visits.
- The headspace worker might suggest they come back every week, or every few weeks, or just when the client feels the need.
The headspace worker might also suggest that there are other people who could help , such as employment workers, and they will help contact these other supports.
Centre of Excellence
The Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health; Parkville, Victoria provides headspace centres with the latest research on diagnosis and treatment so that communities have the capacity to understand how to intervene earlier when mental health issues occur, as well as to identify when acute care is required. The vision of the Centre of Excellence is to establish itself as the definitive source of evidence and information regarding best practice and early intervention in youth mental health, and to be a leader – both nationally and internationally – in generating new research that extends the burgeoning area of youth mental health.
